Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to all, Muriel E. Smith was called by the Lord to transition to the Kingdom of Glory on Saturday morning, September 24, 2022 while living with her daughter and son in Adkins, TX.

Muriel Esther was the youngest of six children born December 28, 1928 to John L. and Fannie J. Caviness. Muriel is preceded in death by her parents, siblings; John Caviness Jr.(Sylvia), James B. Caviness(Hester), Catherine B. Lamkin(Kenneth), Myrtle Jones(Curham), Eulalia Caviness and child; Winston L. Barnes.

She attended San Antonio public schools, graduating from Phyllis Wheatley High school Class of 1946, graduated from Wiley College in 1950 with a BS degree in psychology. Muriel went back to school, attended St. Phillip College to obtain her registered nurse license in 1951. Prior to nursing she did social work with the Campfire Girls and substitute teaching. Throughout her nursing career, she worked at several different facilities which include Robert B. Green Hospital emergency room, San Antonio Blood Bank, and the Methodist Hospital.

Muriel E. Barnes and Robert J. Smith married April 1956, three children were born to this union; Robert J. Jr, Roslyn D., and Gail E.  She enjoyed attending high school football games, parades, supporting the band for each of her children, and later being band mom and chaperone. After suffering an unfortunate back injury at work, that ended her medical career, she was determined to continue working so she perfected her skill of sewing and started making wedding dresses, uniforms, dance costumes, pageant dresses, draperies, if it could be made or repaired on a sewing machine she could do it. No craft intimidated her, re-finishing furniture, making jewelry, gardening and yard work were all challenges she tackled and took pride in it, and encouraged her children to do the same. She enjoyed family gatherings, playing Bid Whist and talking to everyone she met, she knew no strangers. Her favorite past time was shopping and going out to eat but was ready to go wherever someone would take her. Muriel was an animal lover, caring for dogs, birds and all the neighborhood cats. She was an avid San Antonio Spurs fan and would not miss watching or listening to the games, when it was available.

Muriel was baptized at, and a 2nd generation life member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was a member of the rhythm band, taught Sunday school, worked as the church secretary for 8 years, and a youth coordinator for 8 years. As a youth coordinator, she sponsored many events for the youth from social gatherings at the church to driving a van of youth to Astroworld in Houston, TX. She volunteered her time and resources whenever she was able.

Muriel is survived by her children; Robert J. Smith Jr. (Shirley), Roslyn Canada(Durelle), Gail Smith, two nephews; Kenneth Lamkin, Ross Caviness, and a host of grand and great-grandchildren.

  1. I remember her at St. Paul United Methodist Church while we(The Brothers In Harmony were rendering selections during The Morning Worship Services.

    • Bro Charles, thank you for sharing your memories. No doubt that Mom was blessed to have the opportunities to serve the Church and to meet individuals such as yourself. May God bless you and keep you and the bretheren well!

  2. Ms. Muriel was a mother I never had, her personality won over everyone in the room. She loved first and was a light to be around. We miss her deeply.
