Deacon Oliver King Jones, Sr. was born on September 23, 1931 to Mr. and Mrs. Henry (Jessie King) Jones, Sr. in Manor, Texas. Deacon Jones came to Christ at the age of nine years old from the Mourners Bench.The preacher preached from the text recorded in Romans the 6th Chapter, verse number 23. He was baptized in 1940 at Pleasant Bethany Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Arthur McArthur in Elgin, Texas. Later in 1956, Oliver became a member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorage of the late Dr. J.J. Rector, Sr.In 1962, Oliver was ordained as church deacon and was the youngest deacon in the church. He served as the Brotherhood President for two years; Brotherhood Vice-President for two and a half years and was on the Youth Deacon Board, Church Bible Study and Church Prayer Meeting. Oliver's community religious outreach ministry was organizing a prayer team. The purpose of the Prayer Team waas to lead devotional services both in town and out of town. Oliver will always be remembered for organizing at the request of Pastor Rector. In 1955, Oliver was united in holy matrimony to Ms. Lessie L. Wilson.Together they gave to his world two children; one son, Oliver King Jones, Jr; one daughter, Cassandra Hughes. Oliver and Lessie raised his sister-in-law Joyce Wilson and their granddaughter Consewella Hartfield. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Oliver anand Lessie took care of their agricultural farm in Elgin, Texas for many years and would travel back and forth to harvest their crops. Deacon Jones joined the Army and served his country during the Korean War. He was awarded the Bronze Medal. He attended cosmetology school and received his license to become a hairstylist and continued to maintain his license. Oliver worked for DPT Laboratories for 39 years. He also obtained his CPR certification. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Jr, Leo D., Andrew and Maurice Jones; sister Joyce Walker and his grandson Oliver King Jones, III. Deacon Jones leaves to cherish his loving memory, his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Mrs. Lessie Jones; his two children, Oliver Jr. (Jennifer) and Cassandra Hughes (Charles); sister in law Joyce Wilson; sisters Iowa L. Reese of Austin, Texas and Bettie Jones of Portland,, Oregon; granddaughter Consewella Hartfield. great great grandchildren Isis Edwards Jalil Ross; great great granddaughter Nia Ross; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
