Roberto Castro, lovingly known by many as “Coach Castro,” went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 12, 2025, at the age of 68. Born on April 8, 1957, in San Antonio, Texas, Roberto lived a life marked by compassion, dedication, and an unwavering love for others.
A proud graduate of McCollum High School, Roberto went on to earn his Master’s degree in Education from the University of Phoenix. His passion for guiding and uplifting young people led him into a lifelong career in coaching and education. For over 37 years, he dedicated himself to coaching various sports and working closely with special needs children—always with patience, kindness, and a generous heart. He was a member of Santo Nino Catholic Church.
Coach Castro also shared his love for the game through his involvement with the Spurs Youth Camp, Special Olympics, he taught at Catholic school in Corpus Christi “early” in his career. The majority of his career was spent in Harlandale ISD where he taught and coached boys and girls’ basketball, tennis, and track and field and Special Olympics.
Known for being the “life of the party,” Roberto had an infectious smile and a sense of humor that could light up any room. Whether he was telling a joke, lending a helping hand, or sharing a meal with friends and family, Roberto was always giving—never expecting anything in return.
Of all his roles in life, the one he cherished most was being a father. His daughter, Janie, was the apple of his eye, and their bond was unbreakable. They shared countless adventures together, especially their cherished trips to the casinos—memories Janie will treasure forever. His love, laughter, and larger-than-life personality will live on through her and everyone who had the blessing of knowing him.
As he wished, his epitaph will read:
“Big Daddy in the Sky” — a fitting tribute to a man whose presence was as mighty as his heart.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Deanna Castro; daughter, Janie Castro; mother, Guadalupe Castro; aunt, Cora Martinez; cousins, Ray Solis and his wife, Rachael, Ruben Solis and his wife, Rose; step children, Kelly Bohannan and her husband Bryan, Jonathan Sawdon and his wife Leslie, 11 grandchildren; his loyal pet Chewster.
