Life and Legacy of Roy Godley, Sr.
"I will lift up my eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help" Psalms 121:1
Roy Godley Sr was born to Louis and Rosie Foley Godley on January 21, 1921. In his early life, Roy met Lena Marie Evans (deceased) and was united in holy matrimony. This union was blessed with four children, Roy Godley Jr.; Alfred Godley; Doris Marie Godley, and Joyce Marie Godley (deceased).
He was then united in holy matrimony to Ada Mae Davis(Deceased) and this union was blessed with three children; Mary Lee Godley; James Edward Godley(Deceased) and Norma Lee Godley.
Later in life Roy was united in holy matrimony to Ruby Booker Johnson and her two sons; Michael Alan Johnson and Kenneth Paul Johnson.
Deacon Roy Godley was affectionately known to members of his family as; Mr. Roy, Daddy, Dad, Grampa, Gramps, Pop, Uncle Roy, Uncle Thomp, Deacon. and "Thompy".
Roy was a master automobile mechanic. He used his occupation as a mechanic to do his work for the master, many times fixing people cars and directing them to the one who could not only fix their car but could also fix their life (the great fixer) "Jesus"
Many years ago, as a member of the Memorial Baptist Church, Roy was put on trial for a deacon, tested by chosen men of God and with the laying on of their hands; he was ordained as a deacon. He sung the gospel message with the memorial gospel singers that evolved into the Mt. Rose Gospel Singers and from there the group changed their name into the Sensational Harmonizers of San Antonio, Texas. He traveled up and down the highway with his family singing the gospel message.
He believed in sharing his time, his money, his God given gift of singing, his God given gift of healing through prayer in the power that God put in his right hand.
Roy was a member of the State Singing Quartet of Texas for many years. He was State Vice-President until his health no longer allowed him to serve. He was also the local Chapter Board Chairman, and a member of The National Gospel Singers organization.
He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a devoted husband, father, (Daddy), brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. He loved the Lord with all of his heart. He was always ready to tell somebody about the goodness of the Lord.
Roy was well known throughout the city, state and nation for the gospel songs he sung and the encouraging words he spoke. His spiritual life touched everyone around him; young, old, black, white, Hispanic. He loved people and he allowed his life to be used by God. Roy was a mild mannered man and was loved by everyone he came in contact with. He was the "back bone" of the Godley family.
During his life-time, Roy joined several churches in the city; Memorial B/C Goodwill B/C, Wheatley Heights B/C, East St. John B/C, and Pool of Siloam B/C. In 1998, Roy joined the East St. Matthew Baptist Church and was a faithful member until his death.
Roy will be greatly missed. His survivors include his wife, Ruby J. Godley; one sister, Cherry Ware; four children, Rev. Dr. Alfred (Marion) Godley, Doris (Richard) Haynes; Rev. Mary (Rev. Will) Steen; and Norma (Rodrick) Smith. Daughter-in-law, Patricia A. Godley; Step-sons; Michael Johnson, Kenneth(Bridgette) Johnson; a host of grandchildren, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; two sister-in-laws; Nadine Stuart, Gladine Thompson; one brother in-law; James Booker; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
