Shirley Ann Holcomb-Phipps

shirley holcomb-phipps
Our mother, Shirley Ann Holcomb-Phipps-Shoemake, went to be with our Lord and Savior on August 24, 2012 at the age of 76, after a long battle with ovarian cancer. She was born May 22, 1936 to Florence and Arthur Roth in Clearwater, Nebraska. The family later moved to Crawford, Nebraska where mom attended grade school and high school. She was united in marriage to Ramon Holcomb, also of Crawford, on August 19th, 1952. After making their home in Crawford for a short time, they moved to the state of Washington, where they resided in Spokane, Othello, and Moses Lake. To this union four children were born, Alan, Larry, Sharon and Lisa. In 1969, Shirley and family returned to live in Cozad, Nebraska and in 1973 moved back to Crawford. Mom made a loving home for our family in every place we lived. She had a way of brightening everyone's day and became instant friends with whomever she met. On March 6th, 1984 mom received her GED high school diploma. While living in Crawford she worked at the Ponderosa Villa Nursing Home until 1989. On March 4th, 1989, she was united in marriage to Bob Phipps of Lusk, Wyoming. Mom and Bob made their home ranching outside of Lusk until Bob's sudden death in June, 1991. Mom moved into town where she worked providing daily lunch meals and companionship to senior citizens at the Sunshine Senior Center for 12 years. She also provided counseling services to women inmates, at the women's prison facility outside Lusk. Mom met Hartford "Sonny" Shoemake in 2003, and in 2004 moved to Devine, Texas where she and Sonny made their home until her passing. Mom was a wonderful cook and prepared excellent meals. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, crocheting, playing bingo, and visiting with all her friends at the game room in Devine. Shirley was preceded in death by her mother and father, Florence and Arthur Roth, brothers' Dorsey, Lester, and Dwight and sister Goldie. She is survived by her sister June and husband Jimmie Pierce, soulmate Sonny Shoemake, son Alan and wife Tina Holcomb, son Larry Holcomb, daughter Sharon and husband David Robbins, daughter Lisa and husband Lee Young, daughter-in-law Pam and husband Melvin "Spunky" Seiler, ten grandchildren Keith, Christopher, and Jeffrey Holcomb, Joseph and Emma Robbins, Liana Lemmon, Sydney, Ian and Jake Young, and Tyler Seiler, three great grandchildren Jaeger and Jacek Holcomb and Teagan Holcomb. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 30th at 10:00 a.m. at Divine Savior Lutheran Church in Devine. Funeral arrangements are being made through Meadowlawn & American Mortuary in San Antonio. Interment will be at Brummett Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at www.ocrf.org.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. We are sure going to miss her. Words can’t express our heartfelt sympathy. We’ll always share the wonderful memories of all the fun times we had together. The best memories are the holidays spent in Crawford with grandma Roth’s delicious fried chicken and apple pie!! The kids would all play hide-go-seek and kick ball. We had a ball. There was so many conversations and laughs at the kitchen table and dining room!! We’ll cherish our last big visit with everyone. We loved Tina’s big feast of chinese food. It was such a fun time seeing Aunt Shirley, Sonny, Alan, Tina, Keith, Diane, Art, Tony, Joe and myself. The women went to the basement while the men watched the tornado that thankfully did not touch down. Shirley was a wonderful cook and always made everyone around her feel good. She had a wonderful heart and truly touched everyone that was lucky enough to meet her. She will be truly missed. She gave so much love to everyone!! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. June,Jim,Cheryl,Joe,J.J.,Kevin, Arthur,Diane,Tony,Amparo,Anthony &Alexander.

  2. I will always remember Shirley’s beautiful smile and positive attitude. She made everyone around her feel special. She will be missed by her family and friends, but we know she is now in that heavenly presence of Jesus.

  3. Aunt Shirley was always good to me when I was a boy. In 1955, when I was eleven, I rode the train from Portland, OR to Spokane, WA by myself. In Spokane, Aunt Shirley, Uncle Ray, and baby Alan boarded the train, and we all traveled together to Crawford, NE. I guess Aunt Shirley learned to cook from her mother Grandma Roth. I also remember the great fried chicken. May we all meet again in heaven.

  4. Her big smile and genuine laughter was always present. A good mom, a great cook and a true friend to many. A classy lady who always dressed well and loved to socialize. A Christian, now in Heaven…thank you, Shirley for showing us how to live a good life.

  5.
