February 8, 1950 ~ May 27, 2026

Born in: San Antonio, TX
Resided in: San Antonio, TX

As heaven’s trumpets softly sounded and her name was whispered in the wind, Shirley Mae White Hardge slipped away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family and friends. Though our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we find comfort in our faith and in knowing that she is at peace in Jehovah’s loving care.

Shirley was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Geneva Hasty and Robert White and was lovingly raised by Geneva and Lonnie Smith. From an early age, she embodied strength, determination, and compassion, qualities that would define her throughout her life.

Above all else, Shirley treasured her family. She was the proud and devoted mother of Bridget Yvette Johnson Stevens Mullen and Kendra De Shaun Stevens, and the loving Nana of her cherished granddaughter, Shelby Blake Mullen. Nothing brought her greater happiness than being “Momma” to her daughters and “Nana” to her granddaughter. She celebrated their accomplishments, encouraged their dreams, and loved each of them fiercely and unconditionally.

She leaves to cherish her memory her brother, Timothy Smith  (Brenda); her sister, Monette Moore; her nieces, Lonnae Green and Lonneva Green; her nephews, Timothy Smith and Joshua Smith; her great-nieces, Jewell Brown and Destiny Nelson; her great-nephew, Zayvian Shankle; and a host of cousins, relatives, and dear friends. Among them was Delores Vinson, who was much more than a cousin and held a special place in her heart as a beloved sister.

Shirley was welcomed in rest by those who preceded her in death, including her beloved parents, Geneva Hasty Smith and Lonnie Smith; her sister, Lonnie Jean Green; and her brothers, Dale Smith and Michael Smith.
A woman of extraordinary strength and resilience, Shirley was a proud breast cancer survivor whose courage inspired all who knew her. She embraced life with grace, humor, and an unwavering spirit that refused to be diminished by adversity. Whether sharing a laugh, offering encouragement, or simply enjoying the company of those she loved, Shirley had a remarkable ability to make people feel seen, valued, and loved.

An avid reader and lifelong learner, Shirley found great joy in books and brought others together through her love of reading by starting a book club where she created a space for storytelling, meaningful conversations, and lasting friendships. She also enjoyed playing poker and looked forward to her many memorable trips to Las Vegas, where she combined her love of travel, excitement, and friendship. Shirley treasured opportunities to explore new places, create lasting memories, and experience life to its fullest.

Friendship was one of the greatest blessings of Shirley’s life. She cultivated relationships that spanned decades and nurtured them with loyalty, kindness, and genuine affection. Her friends were an extension of her family, and the laughter, support, and fellowship they shared enriched her life beyond measure.

As a proud member of the Phyllis Wheatley High School Class of 1968, Shirley remained deeply committed to preserving the legacy, spirit, and traditions of her beloved alma mater. She carried the pride of Wheatley with her wherever she went, proudly wearing the maroon and gold and supporting the school’s mission and community throughout her life. The bonds she shared with her classmates and fellow alumni remained a source of pride and joy throughout the years.

Though our hearts ache in her absence, we find comfort in knowing that Momma’s love remains woven into the fabric of our lives. As her daughters and granddaughter, we carry forward her strength, resilience, sense of humor, and unwavering love. We will honor her legacy by caring for one another, sharing her stories, and keeping alive the values she instilled in us.
